“Green cars” don’t have to be boring

Inhabitat, a weblog dedicated to the design and innovation in sustainability, has put out a list of the 5 sexiest sustainable sports cars. “Most people think that you just can’t get proper mileage out of electric cars, that they are ugly, and most importantly, that they just can’t go fast,” reads the post. “Well, to prove them wrong… we’d like to bring to you the top 5 greenest, fastest, and sexiest beauties on wheels that we’ve ever seen.”

Of course, with the exception of Tesla Roadster, most of these beauties are pure concepts never to be produced in substantial numbers.

If anyone still doubts that hybrids and clean diesels can power desirable vehicles, have a look at the Italdesign-Guigiaro Quaranta. The car is estimated to hit 60 mph in about 4 seconds before soldiering on to a 155-mph top speed. What’s unique about this car—other than the stunning design—is the powertrain, which consists of a 3.3 liter V6 along with two electric motors that operate together. The effect, the company claims, is to deliver power and response comparable to a gasoline V8, along with fuel consumption that’s better than the average four-cylinder block.
